The Founder Story

The mission came before the name.

Earned Minutes may be newly established, but its mission is not new to Teresa Geter. Her love of basketball began as a player. Her commitment grew through coaching, mentoring, and years of public service. Long before the academy had an official name, she was already using basketball and recreation to teach, encourage, guide, and create opportunities for young people.

About Teresa Geter

From King Park to building the next generation.

“I wasn’t good ‘for a girl.’ I was good—point blank, period.”
1998NCAA National Champion
2002NCAA Elite Eight
WNBAWashington Mystics Draft Pick
GlobalProfessional Career in Asia

I began dribbling a basketball at four years old on the courts of Martin Luther King Park—originally known as Valley Park—in Columbia, South Carolina. At a time when girls were rarely found competing on those courts, I played with and against some of the toughest boys in Columbia Parks and Recreation.

My father, Robert Geter Sr., was my first coach, greatest influence, and true teacher of the game. An accomplished player and respected community mentor, he helped develop generations of athletes on the King Park courts. He taught me that talent must be supported by preparation, discipline, toughness, awareness, accountability, and respect for the game.

I carried that foundation to W.A. Perry Middle School and later Columbia High School, where I became one of South Carolina’s most sought-after players. Legendary coach Pat Summitt recruited me to the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers. As a freshman, I contributed to Tennessee’s undefeated 39–0 season and the 1998 NCAA Women’s National Championship.

After two seasons and several injuries, I transferred home to the University of South Carolina. Alongside Shaunzinski “Shaun” Gortman and my Gamecock teammates, I helped lead South Carolina through the Sweet Sixteen and into the 2002 NCAA Elite Eight. After graduating, I was selected by the Washington Mystics in the 2002 WNBA Draft and continued my playing career professionally in Asia.

When I felt complete in what I had accomplished as a player, my attention returned to the communities that helped me rise. I have since coached at W.A. Perry Middle School, Denmark Technical College, and Allen University; served through Columbia Parks and Recreation; and worked with students with autism and other special needs in Richland County School District One. Those experiences strengthened my ability to teach, engage, and inspire young people across a broad range of backgrounds, abilities, and developmental needs.

Earned Minutes Basketball Academy is the continuation of a mission that began when I was four years old. My purpose is not simply to give back what I was given. It is to build systems and programs that give the next generation even more—so they can develop stronger foundations, reach greater heights, and go farther than those who came before them.

The Earned Minutes Philosophy

Basketball is the training ground. Growth is the goal.

Talent matters, but talent alone does not make a complete player. Playing time is only the beginning: preparation earns confidence, consistency earns trust, accountability earns responsibility, and character earns respect.

“Preparation earns opportunity.”
Earned Minutes core value: effort—compete, communicate, sprint back, and finish the rep
